{"id":237,"date":"2019-09-11T19:24:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T19:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/development\/?p=237"},"modified":"2019-09-11T19:24:01","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T19:24:01","slug":"growing-the-future-port-of-south-louisiana-partners-with-nicholls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/advancement\/2019\/09\/11\/growing-the-future-port-of-south-louisiana-partners-with-nicholls\/","title":{"rendered":"Growing the Future: Port of South Louisiana Partners with ÐÓ°É´«Ã½"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THIBODAUX, La. \u2014&nbsp;ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ and the Port of South Louisiana announced a partnership to aid the study of coastal restoration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the cooperative endeavor agreement, the Port will allocate $18,000 for research, training and coastal restoration projects at the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Farm. This is the fourth year in a row the Port has worked with ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ to support restoration efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s important for everyone to get involved in coastal protection and coastal restoration,\u201d says Paul Aucoin, executive director of the Port. \u201cOur future depends on it, and this contribution is our small way of contributing to that effort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 277-acre farm is three miles south of ÐÓ°É´«Ã½\u2019 campus. The property serves as an environmental research and education center for ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ and other partners. Housed at the farm are labs, classrooms, greenhouses, shade houses, storage barns and a 7.5-acre pond for wetland plant production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ biology students and faculty have spearheaded coastal restoration efforts through the Farm. They have grown, harvested and planted over 30,000 plants in coastal habitats in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis gives us a lot of flexibility to do what we need and be able to respond to the needs of the community,\u201d said Dr. Allyse Ferrara, Jerry Ledet Endowed Professor of Environmental Biology. \u201cWe greatly appreciate the support from the Port of South Louisiana.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As America\u2019s largest tonnage Port district, the Port of South Louisiana is the premier sea gateway for U.S. export and import traffic. Headquartered in LaPlace, the Port stretches 54 miles along the Mississippi River. The stretch of river accounts for 53 industries and 30,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we don\u2019t do this, we will lose our coast. We will lose Thibodaux. We will lose Louisiana,\u201d Aucoin said. \u201cWe are not in the business of coastal restoration.
