Our faculty focuses on teaching, music performance, and scholarship to prepare students for a range of careers in music. Along with musical knowledge, students develop skills in communication, collaboration, and creativity as well as an increased sense of cultural diversity. The department also provides students across campus with general education requirements, numerous musical opportunities, and a deeper understanding and appreciation of the performing arts.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Music is committed to its reputation as a center of excellence in the performing arts and serves as an educational and cultural resource for the region. The faculty embraces the idea that music plays an integral role in preserving and enriching the culture and quality of life for the university and surrounding areas through community outreach and engagement.<\/p>\n<h4>Retention Guidelines<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A student must earn the grade of C or higher in each required course for the major or minor, and meet all graduation requirements as stated under General University Requirements for the Baccalaureate Degree in the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ <em>Catalog<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>All Music majors enrolled in a studio lesson must perform a jury exam during finals week at the end of each semester. The requirements are specified in each course syllabus according to level of study.<\/li>\n<li>At the completion of the fourth semester of study, all Music majors must take the upper-level entrance assessment, which will determine continued study at the junior level. This assessment consists of an expanded jury exam plus a self-study piece.<\/li>\n<li>The Department of Music has updated its website to include an online survey for alumni to complete regarding current address; job title, location, and\/or teaching responsibilities; and suggestions for improving our degree programs.<\/li>\n<li>A student in a Music Education concentration must meet all requirements for admission and progression through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/catalog-2025-2026\/college_of_education\/teacher_education\/\">teacher education curriculum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/catalog-2025-2026\/college_of_education\/student_teaching\/\">student teaching<\/a> and graduation as stated under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/catalog\/2007-2008\/pdf\/2007-2008-COE-teacher_education.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College of Education and Behavioral Sciences<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/catalog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ <em>Catalog<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Music Program<\/h4>\n<p>The University awards the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Music to a student who completes the basic curriculum.\u00a0 This degree is not intended as a substitute for the professional degree in music performance. It is designed to help meet the changing needs of students. Before being permitted to enroll in music courses designated as performance courses, a student must perform a placement audition.<\/p>\n<h4>Minor<\/h4>\n<p>A minor in Music\u00a0is available to all students.
