Ӱɴý recognizes the fact that some employees may need more time off than their leave balance would allow in the event they or their immediate family members become seriously ill or injured. We also recognize that many employees are willing and able to donate some of their own leave hours to help their fellow employees. The concept of shared leave pools was implemented as a good-will program. Each leave pool (Shared Sick Leave & Crisis Leave) specifies a limit to the number of hours that can be donated in a certain time period. Does this limit have to be given in one lump sum donation or can an employee make smaller donations which do not exceed the limit? You may donate leave through multiple donations throughout the year rather than one lump sum donation. However, donations should be in increments of 8 hours. Can employees donate compensatory leave to either of the pools? No. Why are there 2 different policies (crisis leave pool & shared sick leave pool)? Because of guidelines set forth by Louisiana Department of State Civil Service (classified employees) and by the University of Louisiana System, 2 separate policies were necessary to meet guideline compliance. If the employee who donates leave earns less money than the employee who receives leave, will the employee who receives leave be paid at a lower rate than normal? No. Leave pool balances are tracked by hours only, regardless of the salary of the employee donating and that of the employee receiving leave. The review committee will not approve leave for employees who have abused leave. What is the definition of leave abuse? This will be left to the discretion of the review committee and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. What illnesses and injuries are eligible to receive leave from the pools? The Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) definitions will be used to determine whether a situation qualifies. For questions about FMLA, please contact Human Resources. What happens if an employee needs more leave than what is available in the pool? Leave hours that can be approved are limited by the number of hours donated. If there are no hours available, leave will not be approved. When can employees donate leave to the pools? At least 2 leave donation drives will be held annually in an attempt to remind employees about the policies and forms. However, donations will be accepted at any time. Where can employees get donation forms? Forms and policies are on HRs website at  HYPERLINK "http://www.nicholls.edu/hr" www.nicholls.edu/hr. If an employee requests leave from the pools, will he/she have to appear before the review committee to discuss the details? The review committee will contact the employee only if more information is needed to make a decision. Can an employee choose who he/she donates leave to? No. All donations go into the appropriate pool. An employee applies to use leave from the pool, and the review committee decides if he/she will receive the leave they applied for. Is there a specific need for hours to be donated? This program was not started because of any particular employees situation.
