CHRISTMAS IN ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND
\nIt is usually cold and wet in England and Scotland at
\nChristmastime. Families welcome the warmth and cheer of a
\nYule log blazing on the hearth. They decorate their homes with
\nholly, ivy, and other evergreens and hang a mistletoe or
\n“kissing bough.”
\nThroughout the holidays, English carolers go from house to
\nhouse at twilight ringing handbells and singing Christmas songs.
\n“The Holly and the Ivy” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” are
\nEnglish favorites. People give the carolers treats, such as little
\npies filled with nuts and dried fruits. \u201cFather Christmas\u201d is the
\nsame as our Santa Claus, although he is most often seen
\ndressed in green.
\nSome in Scotland like to bake unleavened Yule bread for each
\nperson in their family. Whoever finds a trinket in their loaf will
\nbe blessed with good luck for the year! Other Scottish
\ntraditions include burning a rowan twig as a way to get rid of
\nany bad feelings between friends or family, and the \u2018first-footer\u2019,
\na special name given to the first person to arrive on Christmas
\nDay. To bless their guests, first-footers come with gifts such as
\ncoal, whiskey, salt and bread. Black buns are also a popular firstfooting
\ngift \u2013 they\u2019re made with raisins, currants, almonds, citrus
\npeel, allspice, ginger and cinnamon.
\nThe traditional Christmas pudding popular in Scotland, England
\nand Ireland was originally made from meat and wine. But in
\nrecent years, the meat has been replaced with sweets and
\nother ingredients. The recipe may have changed, but its
\nimportance hasn\u2019t. The dish is usually made five weeks before
\nChristmas and takes on a variety of forms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
