Students often check out books to read for fun, and they have one consistent request: more comics and manga.

Give-N-Day on Tuesday, March 18 will give the Ellender Memorial Library an opportunity to help fulfill that need and also promote our students’ love of reading.

“Give-N-Day is an opportunity to help us give our students what they want,” said Andrew Barbier, Access Services Librarian and library Give-N-Day lead. “A nice side benefit for the students is it can help them form a life-long love for reading.”

Graphic novels and manga aren’t just senseless fun, as they can touch on important topics and studies also help make reading books as a whole more habit forming. More information is in our previous article on early giving.

Thanks to Early Giving, the library has already raised $145 of a $2,025 goal, which in total would purchase about 80 titles.

On Give-N-Day, the library will host a 24-hour stream on Twitch, “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Streaming Librarian.” The early giving stream, which unlocked the 24-hour Give-N-Day stream, featured games based on comics, so the Give-N-Day stream will feature games based on manga. Games included Armored Core 6, Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, Sea of Stars, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution, and One Piece Pirate Warrior 4. The stream team will include Andrew, library volunteer Johnny Shinnaberry, Library Specialist Jenna Bergeron, and Government Information Librarian Jessica Hawkes.

Give-N-Day includes some stretch goals, such as eating bugs on stream for $1,000, several book club operations including Jessica reading all of Ultimate Spider-Man for $3,000, Library Director Brandy Burbante playing Mario Party 8 on stream for $3,500, and Andrew and Johnny getting manga or comic tattoos for $5,000. If Jessica fails to read all 189 issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, she will have to teach Johnny and Andrew to play Wonderwall on guitar. Johnny and Andrew also have consequences if they fail.

“While I’m looking forward to reading Ultimate Spider-Man, it is going to be a challenge to get through before next Give-N-Day,” Jessica said. “We’ll have progress updates on our streams so you can check in on how we are doing on these goals.”

To participate in Give-N-Day, you can donate to Brandy’s fundraiser link here. If you want to keep up to date with the library’s plans and goals, follow us on Instagram.

The library will also be asking for recommendations on which comics and manga to purchase.

To recommend a graphic novel, fill out this form. The recommendation form for manga is here.

Students often check out books to read for fun, and they have one consistent request: more comics and manga.
