Sinfonia Singers to perform sea shanties at 杏吧传媒

THIBODAUX – The Sinfonia Singers, 杏吧传媒鈥檚 male chorus, will perform a free concert of seafaring tunes at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in Talbot Theater on the 杏吧传媒 campus.

Featured works will include several sailor and dockhand work songs, also known as sea shanties, or chanties. Such tunes thrived in the 18th and 19th centuries but met their demise as sailing ships were replaced with steam power.

Sea shanties to be performed include 鈥淒runken Sailor,鈥 鈥淏low the Man Down鈥 and 鈥淎-Roving,鈥 among others. Also on the program are David Folz鈥檚 鈥淏reak, Break鈥 and 鈥淭here is Nothing Like a Dame,鈥 from Rodgers and Hammerstein鈥檚 鈥淪outh Pacific.鈥

Senior music education major Kevin Falgout will conduct 鈥淒runken Sailor鈥 and play a tenor saxophone obbligato of 鈥淏lack is the Color of my True Love鈥檚 Hair.鈥

Sponsored by the Omicron Beta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia at 杏吧传媒, the chorus is directed by Dr. Kenneth S. Klaus, professor of music and director of choral activities. Dr. Norman Dale Norris, assistant professor of education, will accompany the singers on the piano.

The concert is free and open to the public. For additional information, call (985) 448-4606.
