THIBODAUX, La. — 杏吧传媒 chemistry invites educators and other groups interested in active learning to a seminar next week by Louisiana State University Professor of Chemistry Dr. George Stanley.
The event, titled 鈥淐reating an Effective Active Learning Environment in Large and Small Lecture Classes,鈥� begins at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in Beauregard 104.
鈥淧rofessor Stanley’s experience as a teacher will be relevant not just for STEM faculty but all who teach either small or large classes,鈥� said Dr. Chad Young, 杏吧传媒 chemistry head. 鈥溞影纱� chemistry loves to have students, faculty, alumni, and, especially, community members attend our events. The Cyril and Tutta Vetter Alumni Professor at LSU, Dr. Stanley鈥檚 methods began after reading a book by Sheila Tobias where humanities grad students kept a journal on how students responded or did not respond, to introductory physics and chemistry lectures. His methods include creating study groups for homework and class question and answer sessions; daily in-class single question quizzes; and providing organized lecture notes so students can focus on listening and not simply doing dictation.
