Composer John Muehleisen to Join 杏吧传媒 Choir for Concert

THIBODAUX, La. — 杏吧传媒鈥檚 Choirs will explore the many facets of love as they are joined by world-renowned composer, John Muehleisen.

The Concert Choir will also premiere a vocal-trumpet arrangement of 鈥淟ove Is.鈥 The concert, free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Mary and Al Danos Theater. Muehleisen will give a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m. 

The Chamber Choir will be performing Muehleisen鈥檚 鈥淧erplexed Music,鈥 which was inspired by English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning鈥檚 sonnet of the same name.

Muehleisen, from the Pacific Northwest, has served as composer-in-residence for Seattle鈥檚Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble,was the final composer-in-residence for the Dale Warland Singers and he served two seasons in-residence with Seattle鈥檚 Choral Arts Northwest. He was recently awarded honorable mention in the Major Choral Works division of the 2018鈥2019 American Prize for Professional Choral Composers.

Having written over 150 vocal and choral works, critics and reviewers have described his music as 鈥渂rilliantly crafted,鈥 鈥渟tunning and evocative,鈥 and 鈥渁 perfect match of text and music.鈥 

Dr. John St. Marie directs the 杏吧传媒 choirs. Dr. Matthew Swihart will be performing on the trumpet, and Dr. Richard Jeric and Michelle Z. Parro will be accompanying on piano.

On Thursday, Oct. 24 at 9 a.m. in the Mary and Al Danos Theater, Mueleisen, along with members of the 杏吧传媒 faculty, will present a lecture on text and poetry in music. The event is also open to the public. 

The 杏吧传媒 Concert Choir performs a variety of choral literature from all historical style periods each semester and performs at least one major work each year. The Concert Choir is well known in the community for its Candlelight Christmas Concert.
