THIBODAUX, La. — A 杏吧传媒 professor will discuss the power of poetry during a national educators conference that began today.
Dr. Anthony Kunkel will take part in a roundtable discussion titled 鈥淭he Power of Poetry to Enhance Inquiry in the ELA Classroom.鈥� The roundtable will be during the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) annual convention on Nov. 21-24 in Baltimore.
Dr. Kunkel presented on using 鈥渧isual poetry鈥� in the classroom at last year鈥檚 convention. Visual poetry challenges students to use phrasing, visual effects and technology, Dr. Kunkel says. Following the event, the English Language Arts Teacher Educators organization invited him to join the talk.
鈥淪tudents today process their world at a fast pace. Sometimes phrasing can get lost in text speak and memes,鈥� Dr. Kunkel said. 鈥淜ids appreciate poetry and lyrics even more today. But they are often ignored as a means to help students write to express themselves. With all the tech available today, we want to give future teachers a way to engage students on a very creative and relevant level.鈥�
For more than a century, NCTE has provided support to teachers and students from K-12 to college campuses. They offer journals and publications to help advance the voice of educators. Each convention hosts thousands of educators to discuss research, lesson plans and strategies.
