THIBODAUX \u2013 Students at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ State University approved a referendum Wednesday, April 21, to provide the funding necessary to build and operate a campus recreation facility and activities program.<\/p>\n
Passed by a 79-percent margin, the referendum generated the largest voter turnout since Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert became university president in 2003.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to commend the Student Government Association for their leadership in providing the student body with an opportunity to participate in this important decision,\u201d Hulbert said. \u201cThanks to their leadership, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ will no longer be the only University of Louisiana System institution without a recreation center.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hulbert said the next step is to seek the required approval of various state agencies, a process expected to continue until early fall 2010.<\/p>\n
Administrators are planning a groundbreaking ceremony for late fall 2010. Construction is slated to begin in January 2011, with an anticipated completion date some time in fall 2012.<\/p>\n
Students will continue to be active participants in the planning and construction phase of the recreation center, Hulbert added.
