{"id":1651,"date":"2010-09-15T16:07:21","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T21:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=1651"},"modified":"2010-09-15T16:07:21","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T21:07:21","slug":"enrollment-data-at-nicholls-reveal-higher-caliber-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2010\/09\/15\/enrollment-data-at-nicholls-reveal-higher-caliber-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Enrollment data at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ reveal higher caliber students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u2013 The academic quality of new students at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½  State University continued to increase between fall 2009 and fall 2010, according to enrollment data released today by the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ administration.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The total number of first-time freshman students whose ACT composite scores were 28 or higher increased by 34 percent, while the average ACT score of full-time, first-time freshmen students increased from 21.56 to 22.1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth figures are remarkable,\u201d Larry Howell, special assistant to the president, said. \u201cThe boost in the average ACT score, in particular, is by far the biggest annual jump that I\u2019ve seen. These figures illustrate not only that the regional K-12 systems are continuing to do an outstanding job preparing their graduates, but also that ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ continues to be the university of choice in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howell said the increase in academic caliber among new students can also be attributed to the administration\u2019s decision to tighten admissions standards one full year before the date mandated by the University  of Louisiana System.<\/p>\n<p>Another positive trend is the maintenance of racial diversity among first-time freshman students, which increased from 25.66 percent last year to 26.67 percent in fall 2010. Howell said the boost is \u201cespecially encouraging, given our more stringent admissions standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The total enrollment at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ in fall 2010 is 7,093 students \u2013 1,218 of whom are first-time freshman students.
