{"id":2532,"date":"2011-06-21T14:55:15","date_gmt":"2011-06-21T19:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=2532"},"modified":"2011-06-21T14:55:15","modified_gmt":"2011-06-21T19:55:15","slug":"native-plant-project-at-nicholls-expands-to-include-marsh-species","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2011\/06\/21\/native-plant-project-at-nicholls-expands-to-include-marsh-species\/","title":{"rendered":"Native plant project at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ expands to include marsh species"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u2013 A 7.5-acre pond at the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Farm will soon be home to hundreds of thousands of new plants, broadening the research and cultivation capabilities of the Louisiana Native Plant Initiative.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2011\/06\/LNPI-Logo.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-2533\" title=\"Print\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2011\/06\/LNPI-Logo-540x318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>A multi-institution effort, renewed by a signed agreement on May 27 at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Center for Ecology and Environmental Technology, the initiative\u2019s mission is to collect, preserve, increase and study native grasses, forbs and legumes from Louisiana\u2019s ecosystems. In doing so, researchers hope to conserve a vanishing natural resource and help jumpstart the development of a native seed industry that will supply plant materials for restoration, revegetation, roadside plantings and the ornamental plant industry.<\/p>\n<p>The pond at the University Farm will expand the initiative\u2019s domain of species to include marsh and wetland plants that grow in 12 to 18 inches of water \u2013 black needlerush, giant bulrush and smooth cordgrass, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur terrestrial plant capabilities at the farm are already well established,\u201d Dr. Quenton Fontenot, associate professor of biological sciences and coordinator of the marine and environmental biology graduate program, said. \u201cThis pond will allow us to increase the number of species and types, adding to our coastal restoration capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Renovation of the pond, which will involve partitioning it into three, independently drainable units, has been funded by project partners, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL).\u00a0 Plants produced in the pond will be used by ÐÓ°É´«Ã½, BTNEP and CRCL for coastal restoration. Private contractors are currently bidding for the pond renovation project.<\/p>\n<p>For additional information about the LNPI, maintained in part by ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ students enrolled in service-learning
