{"id":2727,"date":"2011-08-25T14:05:50","date_gmt":"2011-08-25T19:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=2727"},"modified":"2011-08-25T14:05:50","modified_gmt":"2011-08-25T19:05:50","slug":"attorney-general-to-help-nicholls-collect-unpaid-debts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2011\/08\/25\/attorney-general-to-help-nicholls-collect-unpaid-debts\/","title":{"rendered":"Attorney general to help ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ collect unpaid debts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u2013 In order to collect outstanding debts totaling nearly $2 million over the past 30 years, the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ administration has decided to turn over debt-collection responsibilities to the Office of the Louisiana Attorney General.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2011\/08\/Louisiana-Attorney-General.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-2728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2011\/08\/Louisiana-Attorney-General-459x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a>Mike Naquin, associate vice president for finance and chief financial officer at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½, said the decision follows the recommendation of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, who determined that the collection resources of the attorney general\u2019s office, for public clients like ÐÓ°É´«Ã½, outweigh that of private collection firms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attorney general will take over this responsibility in January of 2012,\u201d Naquin said. \u201cUntil then, we urge all students, former students and alumni with unpaid tuition and fees to promptly pay the university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Larkins, public information officer for the Office of the Attorney General, said the state\u2019s debt-collection policies are thorough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDebts placed with the attorney general\u2019s office are subject to legal collections efforts which may include, but are not limited to, letters, calls, suits, judgments and garnishments of wages and\/or assets,\u201d Larkins said. \u201cDebts may be reported to the credit bureaus and the Department of Revenue for tax offset. If debts go through the legal process a debtor may expect attorney\u2019s fees, interest and court costs to be added to their debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For details on payment procedures at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½, go to
