{"id":6033,"date":"2017-01-27T17:14:54","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T23:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=6033"},"modified":"2017-01-27T17:14:54","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T23:14:54","slug":"nicholls-to-celebrate-african-american-history-month-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2017\/01\/27\/nicholls-to-celebrate-african-american-history-month-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ to celebrate African-American History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ will celebrate African-American History Month with special public programs including concerts, film screenings, book talks and other presentations that span the month of February.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Keynote speaker, Dr. Cleveland Hill, will kick off the month-long series at 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1 with a town hall discussing \u201cThe Crisis in Education,\u201d this year\u2019s national theme. Hill was the first African-American student-athlete at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ and later became the dean of the College of Education at his alma mater, retiring in 2006.\u00a0 The event will be held LeBijou Theater in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union and is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Throughout the month, other notable campus guests will include John DeSantis, a local author and journalist who will discuss his recently published book, \u201cThe Thibodaux Massacre: Racial Violence and the 1887 Sugar Cane Labor Strike\u201d; Sha\u2019Condria \u201ciCon\u201d Sibley, an award-winning spoken word poet; Ellis L.
