THIBODAUX, La. –The ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Department of Art will host a ceramic figure exhibition from a prominent southern artist in the Ameen Art Gallery.<\/p>\n
Called, \u201cTrue Stories\u201d the exhibit features the work of Stacey Johnson who has roots in both Mississippi and south Louisiana.<\/p>\n
A Biloxi, Mississippi, resident, Johnson grew up in the Mississippi Delta and her work represents her upbringing. She received her bachelor\u2019s degree from Loyola University-New Orleans and her master\u2019s degree from the University of Georgia. She previously worked for the Ohr-O\u2019Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi as the director of ceramics.<\/p>\n
Her art is regularly on display through Mississippi and Louisiana and has been featured in the Mississippi Museum of Art and Fischer Galleries in Jackson and the Ogden Museum of Art and the Hall-Barnett Gallery in New Orleans.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up in the Delta of Mississippi, surrounded by cotton and blues and some of the best outsider artwork in the world,\u201d said Johnson on her website. \u201cThis was a deeply Southern stage, set with backdrops of fields and soulful history, of stereotypes dividing men and women, of rich and poor, black and white. All of these things have impacted my life and influenced my storytelling in clay. Each sculpture is a chapter in a book that I edit, color, and scribble upon. .. like a diary of unspoken thoughts, remnants of dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n
The exhibit is free and open to the public and will run until Sept. 14 in the Ameen Art Gallery in Talbot Hall.<\/p>\n
Johnson will lead a workshop and lecture from 8:40 to 10:30 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. on Sept. 15 in the ceramics studio, Talbot 108.<\/p>\n
