\nTHIBODAUX, La. — The ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Department of Art invites you to view student artwork depicting dystopia – a society faced with a cataclysmic decline, a tyrannical government or collapse – in the annual Kappa Pi Themed Exhibition. <\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibit will run from now until Nov. 2 in the Ameen Art Gallery in Talbot Hall and from Nov. 5 to Dec. 7 at the Chauvin Sculpture Garden Art Studio. <\/span><\/p>\n

The theme \u201cDystopia\u201d was selected by a vote of the Kappa Pi chapter members. Artworks submitted to the exhibition must in some way address the theme to be eligible for inclusion. A total of 44 students, some not art majors, submitted work to the exhibition. \u00a0Famous examples of dystopia are George Orwell\u2019s \u201c1984\u201d and Aldous Huxley’s \u201cBrave New World.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I would encourage people to attend the exhibition to see how students interpret the word dystopia, and all of the meanings it has in contemporary culture,\u201d said <\/span>Ross Jahnke, art professor and exhibitions coordinator.<\/span> \u201cSome art is a very literal interpretation of the word, while other pieces take a more tangential approach. Unlike the Annual Student Exhibition in the spring, which is for art majors only, and for art produced in art classes, this is a chance to see what students will do on their own.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A reception and awards ceremony will take place from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Ameen Art Gallery. <\/span><\/p>\n

Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kappa Pi is an International Art Honor Society founded in 1911, with chapters throughout the world. Zeta Alpha Zeta is the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Chapter of Kappa Pi, and has been active for over 15 years. Zeta Alpha Zeta members sponsor this annual themed exhibition as well as participate in numerous extracurricular activities each year, such as ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Can, Shark after Dark, Artworks, Welcome Back Day and High School Day. <\/span><\/p>\n
