THIBODAUX, La. — ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ invites you to explore Louisiana\u2019s coastal land loss this fall through the work of an artist and alum.<\/p>

Prints and mixed media works by Ernest Milsted (BA \u201802) combine to create \u201cWhite Boots and Black Ink: Recent Work by Ernest Milsted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

The exhibit opens Monday, Aug. 19 and will run until Friday, Sept. 6. Open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Ameen Art Gallery in Talbot Hall, the event is free and open to the public.<\/p>

Louisiana is losing 25 to 35 square miles of wetlands per year, according to Restore or Retreat. The highest rates occur in the Barataria and Terrebonne basins at 10 and 11 square miles per year.<\/p>

The Houma native has spent the past several years creating art and documenting this loss.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cI grew up exploring the hauntingly beautiful Louisiana coastal landscape,\u201d he said. \u201cMy goal is to promote awareness of the plight of Louisiana through the visual language of art. I intend for the work to form a loose narrative about place, time, life and death. The work will speak of man\u2019s struggle to survive in the ephemeral landscape that exists between land and sea.\u201d<\/p>

Milsted in part created the works during a one-week artist\u2019s residency at the Chauvin Sculpture Garden.<\/p>

Milsted earned an M.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 2006, where he received The Snite Museum of Art\u2019s Walter R. Beardsley Award for his thesis project.\u00a0<\/p>

The ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Alumni Federation recognized Milsted as theOutstanding Alum from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2011.\u00a0<\/p>

Milsted now teaches printmaking and drawing at Southeastern Louisiana University.\u00a0<\/p>
