{"id":8419,"date":"2021-04-19T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=8419"},"modified":"2021-04-19T11:55:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T16:55:58","slug":"nicholls-geomatics-student-awarded-prestigious-professional-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/19\/nicholls-geomatics-student-awarded-prestigious-professional-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Geomatics Student Awarded Prestigious Professional Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asprs.org\/\">American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing<\/a> has awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/\">ÐÓ°É´«Ã½<\/a> student Ashish Pandey with a&nbsp; scholarship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nepal native is the recipient of the $7,000 Francis Moffit Memorial Scholarship. Pandey, a junior geomatics major, said the money gives him peace of mind to focus on his academics and not on how to pay for college.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI could not believe myself when I got the email notification; I had to check to make sure it wasn\u2019t spam,\u201d Pandey said. \u201cTo receive a scholarship from the highest value from such a reputed organization is unbelievable for me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the first time Pandey has been recognized. In the Fall, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsps.us.com\/\">National Society of Professional Surveyors Foundation<\/a> awarded Pandey with the Nettite Dracup Memorial Scholarship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pandey is a research assistant for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/applied-sciences\/faculty\/dr-balaji-ramachandran\/\">Dr. Balaji Ramachandran<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/applied-sciences\/\">geomatics<\/a> program coordinator. Together, they are working on multiple research projects including studying a new data fusion and analytics method for monitoring sugarcane crops, and another involving developing an algorithm to better define wetland loss and gain in the Mississippi Delta.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAshish has demonstrated critical thinking skills, understanding complex concepts, and a level of commitment necessary to succeed in college and beyond,\u201d Dr. Ramachandran said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pandey, who grew up in the rural municipality of Kaligandaki with a similar population as Thibodaux, is enrolled at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ to advance his family\u2019s legacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI chose geomatics because I wanted to complete what my father could not complete with a degree,\u201d he said. \u201cI love working with numbers, so this combination of passion and inspiration lead me down this path. And there is not a second that I regret it because it has been worth every penny and second of time I have invested in it. ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ has been a home away from home.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His goal after graduation is to pursue a graduate degree in geomatics and computer data science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Francis Moffit Memorial Scholarship is a prestigious award given out to only one student in the nation every year,\u201d Dr. Ramachandran said. \u201cIt is a pleasure to see one of my students receive that honor, and it also reflects on the quality of the geomatics education provided at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Geomatics Program aims to provide its graduates with professional surveying and mapping education. The program offers students unique research and outreach opportunities, often involving protecting the Louisiana coast.
