{"id":8513,"date":"2021-07-08T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=8513"},"modified":"2021-07-08T10:41:48","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T15:41:48","slug":"nicholls-biology-student-brings-home-two-research-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/nicholls-biology-student-brings-home-two-research-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Biology Student Brings Home Two Research Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/\">ÐÓ°É´«Ã½<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/biology\/\">Biology<\/a> Grad Student Austin Ortman won two research awards at the <a href=\"https:\/\/la.louisianaafs.org\/?view=classic\">Louisiana Chapter of the American Fisheries Society<\/a> annual meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ortman received first place for his research poster and second place for his abstract, which was held virtually on May 27-28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The title of Ortman\u2019s research is \u201cThe effects of environmental hypoxia on red swamp crayfish <em>procambarus clarkii<\/em> life history and fecundity characteristics in the Atchafalaya River Basin.\u201d His research examines how extended low oxygen water affects the size and population of the crayfish. Additionally, his research studies the fertility differences in female crayfish exposed to hypoxic, or low oxygen, and normal waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ortman works in the <a href=\"https:\/\/labs.nicholls.edu\/bonvillain\/\">Aquatic Ecology and Astacology Lab<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/biology\/faculty\/dr-christopher-bonvillain\/\">Dr. Chris Bonvillain<\/a>, associate professor of biological sciences and internationally recognized crayfish expert. Research at the lab focuses on the ecology and biology of Louisiana crayfishes and aquatic systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are efforts to improve water quality throughout the Atchafalaya Basin and Austin\u2019s research will show why this is important for crayfish populations,\u201d Dr. Bonvillain said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Established in 1979, the society serves as a local resource for fisheries professionals and students to communicate and exchange information.
