{"id":8602,"date":"2021-11-12T16:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=8602"},"modified":"2021-11-12T16:11:19","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T22:11:19","slug":"nicholls-honors-director-students-attend-national-honors-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2021\/11\/12\/nicholls-honors-director-students-attend-national-honors-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Honors Director, Students Attend National Honors Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; Dr. Brigett Scott discussed peer mentoring strategies as one of the highlight presentations during the 56th annual National Collegiate Honors Conference last month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference was held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort near Orlando from Oct. 27-31.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Scott\u2019s presentation, titled \u201cReimagining Honors Peer Mentoring\u201d focused on the impact of peer mentoring during COVID-19. Co-presenters were Jennifer Schlege, Kutztown University; Susan Dinan, Adelphi University; Jacob McCoy, Texas AM University; and Lynn Stallings, Auburn University in Montgomery. Together, their research highlighted peer mentoring strategies before, during and after the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Scott attended the conference with nine ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Honors students:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gracie Agosta, senior biology major from Thibodaux<\/li><li>Aleksandra Adams, junior psychology major from Jeanerette<\/li><li>Alexander Wright, junior math major from Gary<\/li><li>Faith Boutte, sophomore biology major from Zachary<\/li><li>Sarah Clement, senior political science major from Bourg<\/li><li>Bincy Biju, sophomore biology major from Houma<\/li><li>Bracie Jones, sophomore chemistry major from Hahnville<\/li><li>Claire Graff, senior health sciences major from Metairie&nbsp;<\/li><li>Linda Leitz, senior accounting major from El Dorado, Arkansas.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe students attended sessions where they learned valuable skills such as interviewing and cover letter writing,\u201d Dr. Scott said. \u201cThey also met other Honors students and faculty from across the country. This starts their networking resources and exposes them to several interesting topics regarding Honors education and career building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference highlights student and faculty research presentations from across the nation while providing training and development for honors program administrators and staff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI attended several sessions at the conference, but the ones that I learned the most from were about ways that as an Honors Director I can help my students find valuable resources like federal scholarship programs,\u201d Dr. Scott said. \u201cI also learned some new teaching techniques and resources that can be applied here at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ in our Honors program.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The national submission process for the annual conference is highly selective, with hundreds of students and faculty submitting proposals each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Collegiate Honors Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support and enhance the community of educational institutions, professionals and students who participate in collegiate honors education around the world.
