{"id":8609,"date":"2021-11-30T12:25:46","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T18:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=8609"},"modified":"2021-11-30T12:25:47","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T18:25:47","slug":"peltier-foundation-to-support-hurricane-ida-recovery-for-nicholls-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2021\/11\/30\/peltier-foundation-to-support-hurricane-ida-recovery-for-nicholls-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Peltier Foundation to Support Hurricane Ida Recovery for ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; The Peltier Foundation has donated $50,000 to ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ to help the campus community recover from Hurricane Ida.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The money will be split among the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Foundation and ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Alumni Federation, with $37,500 being used to provide gift cards to students, and the remaining $13,500 to go toward Alumni Affairs operating expenses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to support the news of the community after Hurricane Ida and we felt that ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ was a way that we could get those funds directly to the individuals who need our support,\u201d said Stephen Peltier, Peltier Foundation president. \u201cIt is really gratifying to be in a position to help these students, and we\u2019re hopeful that this will help them as they take another step forward after the storm.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hurricane Ida, which made landfall on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, brought devastating winds and storm surge to the Bayou Region. An estimated 25 percent of Lafourche and Terrebonne Parish\u2019s homes were destroyed or are uninhabitable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately two-thirds of the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ community report that their homes were damaged by Hurricane Ida, with one-in-five students saying their homes were destroyed or uninhabitable. Additionally, more than half of students say they or their families lost access to reliable income from the storm, and another 16 percent reported that their car was damaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHurricane Ida has turned the lives of our students and the greater campus community upside down,\u201d ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ President Dr. Jay Clune said. \u201cBut the community has stepped forward and so has the Peltier Foundation. The folks on the Foundation have provided decades of support and have always been generous, taking care of our students and our university, and this is no different.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in the mid-1990s, the Peltier Foundation has given more than $3 million to ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ over the past two decades, supporting projects and programs such as ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Online, the Mary and Al Danos Theater, the Lanny D. Ledet Culinary Arts Building, Peltier Hall, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Soccer Complex and Stopher Gym.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Alumni Federation honored the foundation\u2019s generosity by awarding the
