{"id":9170,"date":"2023-06-07T10:01:40","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T15:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=9170"},"modified":"2023-06-07T10:01:40","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T15:01:40","slug":"nicholls-biology-graduate-students-win-most-awards-at-laafs-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/07\/nicholls-biology-graduate-students-win-most-awards-at-laafs-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Biology Graduate Students Win Most Awards at LAAFS Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">THIBODAUX, La. \u2013<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ÐÓ°É´«Ã½<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Marine and Environmental Biology graduate students won six of the nine student awards at the Louisiana Chapter of the American Fisheries Society <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/la.louisianaafs.org\/p\/2023-state-meeting.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">annual meeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> held in Baton Rouge on May 25-26, 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThese awards highlight the important research our graduate students are conducting throughout Louisiana and the dedication and hard work on their presentations and thesis research,\u201d said Dr. Christopher Bonvillain, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ director of University Graduate Studies and associate professor of biology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following were awarded:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Elizabeth Myers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Second place abstract and second place poster, Comparison of the littoral and pelagic aquatic faunal communities at Isle de Jean Charles, a degraded natural estuarine ridge in Terrebonne Basin, Louisiana<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Katherine Wright<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Third place abstract and third place poster, Ecology and life history of two Alligator Gar metapopulations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dinah Cador<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Second place oral presentation, Utility of eye lenses to investigate habitat use, trophic ecology, and life history of Spotted Gar Lepisosteus oculatus and Alligator Gar Atractosteus spatula<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Haleigh Sever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Third place oral presentation, Comparison of feeding regimes for culturing juvenile Spotted Gar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/la.louisianaafs.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Louisiana American Fisheries Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> began in spring of 1979 as a local resource for fisheries professionals and students to communicate and exchange information regarding the state&#8217;s fisheries. The Chapter meets annually every spring and offers a mid-year workshop to expand and review professional skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/biology\/master-of-science-degree-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">marine and environmental biology program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ State allows students to take an expedition through Louisiana\u2019s swamps, marshes and coastal areas. With state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and easy access to multiple field sites, graduate students are well-prepared for real-world marine and environmental careers upon completion of their graduate school expedition at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½.
