THIBODAUX, La. \u2013 ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ <\/span>Department of Art<\/span><\/a> hosted its annual High School Day in November, with 240 students from 16 high schools, as well as 6 homeschoolers, attending and taking part in 7 workshops taught by faculty members and ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ art students. Participants learned about art history, ceramics, drawing, painting, graphic design, photography, printmaking and sculptures. This event, started in 1991, introduces junior and senior high school students taking art classes throughout our region to the bachelor of fine arts program at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“This was a great day of service for our art students as they worked with the high school students that participated in the activities. Many of the students from ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ also served as ambassadors and welcomed visitors from their former high schools. In addition to the efforts the Department of Art made to reach out to new students, we also had the opportunity to welcome alumni back to campus, as many of the art teachers are graduates from ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ and are now teaching in the field,” said Professor Ross Jahnke, chair of the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Department of Art.<\/span><\/p>\n

ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Art Department also hosted its 13th Annual Down the Bayou Iron Pour. Michael Williams, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ associate professor of art, organized this event held at the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Farm in October. Professors and students from the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Mississippi, Louisiana State University and Lamar University participated in the event and poured over 900 pounds of iron. As a regional event, the iron pour allows students and faculty from the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ art program to build relationships with artists at universities throughout the south. The event promotes student engagement, graduate school placement and collaboration between universities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Art is set to host an Open House in the spring of 2024 for students and their parents interested in the art program at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½. For more information, please contact <\/span>ross.jahnke@nicholls.edu<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
