Faculty have basic responsibilities in teaching or librarianship, scholarly activity (see sections titled Basic Responsibilities of Faculty (2.7), Performance of Faculty Activities (2.7.1), and Criteria for Scholarly or Artistic Activity (2.10.2.3) in this Manual) and service. The University assigns workload in terms of teaching duties, library assignments, or approved alternate work from teaching.<\/p>
Board policy (ULS C-III.I.D ) states that \u201ceach person employed as a full\u2013time instructional faculty member shall be assigned a minimum of 24 semester credit hours, or its equivalent, of instruction in organized undergraduate classes each academic year.\u201d University academic personnel may be compensated for professional duties assigned or performed in addition to their usual regular assignment. Those personnel whose duties encompass organized sponsored research activity shall be compensated in accordance with the applicable University guidelines (see Section 2.12.3.3 titled Academic Daily Salary Rate Calculation for 9-Month Employee in this Manual).<\/p>
Committee assignments are considered as part of the normal workload. Full time faculty members can be appointed to serve on only three University\u2013level standing committees per academic year. The Committee on Committees shall ensure that committee appointments do not exceed that number. This policy does not apply to committees to which faculty are elected.<\/p>
<\/a>2.7.3.1 Probationary and Tenure Contract Faculty<\/a><\/p> 2.7.3.2 Term Contract Faculty<\/a><\/p> 2.7.3.3 Equitable Distribution of Workload<\/a><\/p> 2.7.3.4 Alternate Work from Teaching<\/a><\/p> 2.7.3.5 Scheduling Practices<\/a><\/p> <\/a><\/p> The primary teaching assignment for full\u2013time probationary (tenure track) and full\u2013time tenured faculty shall be no more than 24 credit hours per academic year or its equivalent. Exceptions may apply for independent study courses and internships. Any additional teaching assignments must be agreed upon by faculty for an overload fee. The assignment of library faculty shall be a minimum of 40 hours per week.<\/p> Back to Top<\/a><\/p> <\/a><\/p> The primary teaching assignment for full\u2013time term faculty shall be no more than 30 credit hours per academic year or its equivalent. Exceptions may apply for independent study courses or internships. Any additional teaching assignments must be agreed upon by faculty for an overload fee. The teaching assignment for part-time term appointment employees shall not exceed 9 semester credit hours in a semester. The assignment of library faculty shall be 40 hours per week.<\/p> Back to Top<\/a><\/p> <\/a><\/p> The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, in consultation with Deans and Department Heads, shall determine workload assignments according to the following guidelines:<\/p> Back to Top<\/a><\/p> <\/a><\/p> After consultation with the faculty and Head of a department, the Dean shall recommend to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs all requests for alternate work from teaching. Faculty members approved for alternate work from teaching assignments shall devote a minimum of three (3) clock hours per week for each semester hour of alternate work time to tasks associated with such alternate work time. Guaranteed alternate work time from teaching shall be provided for Department Heads and Faculty Directors.<\/p> Alternate work time from teaching to engage in sponsored research, University supported scholarly or creative activity, University service or other approved activities may be authorized by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs dependent upon the availability of funds and program needs.<\/p> Back to Top<\/a><\/p> <\/a><\/p> In general, course assignments are determined by faculty expertise. This practice does not guarantee that any courses will be assigned to a faculty for subsequent semesters.
