THIBODAUX, La. \u2014 A ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Chemistry student\u2019s research will be on \ndisplay at the American Chemical Society\u2019s 2019 Midwest Regional \nMeeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conference accepted hundreds of abstracts, including three from \nÐÓ°É´«Ã½ chemistry seniors Taylor Mabile of Thibodaux, Abigail Grabert \nof Lockport and Nicholas Mayon of Thibodaux. The American Chemical \nSociety then selects a smaller number to highlight as Exceptional \nAbstracts. Among them is Grabert\u2019s abstract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grabert is using a fluorescent probe to study biomolecules like \nproteins. The photophysics of this molecule are not well understood, \nparticularly in viscous environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s almost unbelievable to me that I\u2019ll not only be in the presence\n of real-life research chemists, whose work applies to current problems \nof today, but also that I\u2019ll be presenting my work among them,\u201d Grabert \nsaid. \u201cIt\u2019s so cool to me to be able to go from learning about research \nwork in a classroom setting to experiencing it firsthand and hearing \nabout the work of people who are trying to make a difference in the \nscientific world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ chemistry requires many of its undergraduates to take part \nin mentored research projects. This gives students a chance to start \nlearning about higher-level research. Further, conferences give students\n an opportunity to present their research, which prepares them for \ngraduate school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis honor illustrates that our students are successful in a global \narena, and they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best scientists in \nthe world,\u201d said Dr. Chad Young, ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ chemistry department head. \u201cIt\n is true that we have excellent students, but, most importantly, we have\n faculty that are devoted to student success. They spend many hours a \nweek with their research students. Their greatest joy is to see students\n like Abigail, Nicholas and Taylor succeed as chemists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
