The following Senator was absent: Joseph Lirette Student Supreme Court was represented by Chief Justice Kate Clement. Election Commission was not represented. Guests present were Dr. Jay Clune, University President, Dr. Michele Caruso, Vice President of Student Affairs and Student Government Association Advisor and Gabriel Fontenot. Minutes of the June 16, 2025 Special Meeting were approved as printed. GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Jay Clune Welcome Back. Weve spent a lot of time this summer getting the campus ready for your return: Were still working on the cafeteria. We painted the ceiling and will bring in architectural ceiling tiles and make it beautiful. We made some changes to the floor and well replace all the furniture in the Student Union as the semester goes on. Calecus Weve renovated Calecus. Milet/Zeringue We changed the carpet in the hallways that were worn out, changed all flooring on another floor of Scholars Hall. Brady Apartments got some external repairs like rotting wood and things of that sort. Theres a lot of pressure washing going on around campus. We replaced a lot of lights in the Library. Its much brighter with paint on the walls and lightbulbs in the ceiling. We spent $80,000 for lightbulbs in the Library. Gouaux Hall We spent $36,000. Now you can see in the classrooms. There are new lights and the hallways have been painted. Were going back with a bid to rewrap that Hall with new metal and brick. Were trying to work through that bid and get it to fit the budget. The Student Union will see renovations soon. Theres a Starbucks coming in the Fall of 2026. There is a Smoothie King blending now as you know. The biggest thing this week is Game Zero this weekend. Its very important! We dont have enough people on this campus to stay home. We need students, faculty, staff and the community to go as 14,000 people. Our stadium seats 10,000 and we need every student, every faculty member and every staff member to go out and support us. GUEST SPEAKER CONTINUED: GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Michele Caruso Welcome! I see a lot of new faces. We have a great experience and I encourage all of you to make the most of this opportunity. It does look good on a resume but its truly part of your career readiness. Its worth a lot. In the upcoming year well have some people come talk to us about that. Youll hear about that. A few things to note that are going on that will affect a portion of or all of the student body are the new hazing laws. The part that will affect you is the training component which prior to now was one hour so its for any student involved in any student group on campus and that would, of course, include you. You are required two hours so were working on that. Well send notice out. It will encourage them that not only will SGA work on 100% compliance but that you help us encourage your peers in other organizations to do so. Part of the new law also states that student organizations and student groups that do not comply 100%, that all members of their group that are officially on the roster must be deactivated. Well get notice out to everyone to help everyone understand it. Another email youll be getting is ACT 157 which requires that we offer students to identify parents or guardians for emergency contacts. That the university would call if you find yourself in an emergency related to mental health. It might be that we already have that in some ways. This pulls it all together. Were required to do that in a kind of formal way. So, youll receive a message about that as well. Its optional but I hope you encourage people to take advantage of it. It does help us to ensure that we have accurate information should we need to contact your family to support you. Flu shots Some nursing students need flu shots and some TB Tests and things like that. Our University Health Services, the Nursing Department and Walgreens are coming out tomorrow between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This is being offered for students. If you have insurance on your own or through your parents, bring your card with you. If you dont, thats o.k., theyre going to give it to those who dont have insurance or their insurance card. To confirm, its the upcoming years version, not last years. We have a lot of things going on around campus. We have Colonel Fest, Welcome Back Day this week. Pay attention to that and take part in it. The SGA polos with the new logo look fantastic. Wear those whenever you can so students can identify you as part of SGA and ask you questions, especially at Welcome Back Day. The football game this week is very special. This is not only an opportunity to go to a football game and experience the fun of that but its a chance for you, on national television, to show the world what Ӱɴý Colonel Pride looks like. So if nothing else, show up with that. We dont get enough recognition about how awesome Ӱɴý is. This is one of those rare opportunities to show it off on national television. People will be watching so gather your friends, wear your Ӱɴý gear and put on a good show for us. OFFICER REPORTS: PRESIDENTS REPORT CRUZ CASSARD As I deliver my first Presidents Report, Id like to approach it not with formality, but with purpose by offering some insight into the journey ahead and a bit of advice to the newly sworn members of SGA. For me, SGA has always been a space for bold discussion, respectful debate, and decisive action all aimed at making this campus better for every student. I invite each of you to see this chamber as I have: a place where ideas grow, where leadership is sharpened, and where progress is made. I remember sitting in your seats just a Senator for Athletics trying to advocate for the needs of student-athletes. I remember every piece of legislation I introduced, and all the lessons I learned in the process (especially about purchasing and logistics!). My advice to you: Embrace mistakes. Ask questions. Learn the process. It will make you a stronger Senator, and more importantly, a better leader. Approach every Senate conversation like a business discussion professional, not personal. Listen first. Some of your colleagues will make arguments strong enough to change your mind, but only if youre willing to hear them. OFFICER REPORTS CONTINUED: PRESIDENTS REPORT CONTINUED: One of my favorite Presidents, Josiah Bartlet from The West Wing, once quoted: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. I live by that motto. And I believe it applies here. Over the coming months, both the Executive and Legislative branches must work hand-in-hand to tackle some big initiatives. (Id use stronger language, but this isnt the setting for it!) My team and I are here to support you in every way. Soon, I will introduce two major legislative initiatives: The SGA All-In Package The SGA Financial Modernization Package These packages will represent a turning point in the history of student government at Ӱɴý. You can expect bold reforms from overhauling foundational documents to enhancing funding access, referendum policies, campus projects, a residential living programming budget, and new community partnerships. Stay tuned were just getting started. This summer, we didnt sit still. We prepared and we built the foundation for the year ahead. Id like to thank Adriana, Justin, Kaylee, Ethan, and Mrs. Dolly your commitment and hard work have been extraordinary. I truly appreciate each of you. Also to our Summer Judiciary Committee, thank you for your continued support to guarantee that SGA can function in the manner intended. Also, I want to give a big shout out to the men of SAE and TKE alongside the helping hands of Chi Alpha who answered the call to help complete the Hydrate The Halls initiative. Your work ethic and dedication are truly appreciated by me and the student body. To our Senators: Get ready for an experience unlike any other. SGA is not just a leadership position its a platform for lasting impact. What you do in this chamber can become your legacy. Thank you for your time and attention during this first, perhaps untraditional, Presidents Report. Now lets get to work. Lets commit to making the student experience at Ӱɴý the very best it can be. Lets make that old saying true You have to be coming here to get here and lets add our own twist: Once you come here, you stay here. DIRECTOR OF STUDENT RIGHTS & GRIEVANCES REPORT JUSTIN HELPER This summer I have been hearing grievances from students and have been assisting them through the processes as needed. I plan to issue the first Senate Update form to the senators the first week of September. The Senate Update is very self-explanatory where all I am looking for is to see what you have been doing as a senator and who you have been talking to around your respected areas. I have been diligently working to assemble the ACE team or SAAC of one athlete from each sports team here at Ӱɴý to represent all of athletics for their committee. I have also been looking at the current tailgating policy and coming up with some ideas for possible reform for the upcoming meeting this Thursday. TREASURERS REPORT ETHAN GISCLAIR First, for the Summer Financial Statement We finalized our revenues, expenses, and the final rollover total for the period of July 1Aug 17 Next, the SGA 20252026 Yearly Budget I coordinated with our president to put together the full academic year budget, covering both the fall and spring semesters. OFFICER REPORTS CONTINUED: TREASURERS REPORT CONTINUED: Finally, the SenatorTreasurer Verification Form This is something new weve created. So any time a motion passes, senators and I will fill out this form together. It covers the decision we made and exactly which budget line item will fund it. This way, we all know where the funding comes from, we maintain accurate records, and have a paper trail to look back on if needed. DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS REPORT No report. VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT ADRIANA MAGALLON Welcome everyone. It is finally the moment that I can say the E-Board has been waiting for. We have been preparing so much this summer to hit the ground running starting today. With almost a full senate and many ideas and projects pushing forward, we cannot be happier to see what this year of student government holds. We thank each person who has helped us get to where we are especially Mrs. Dolly. Moving forward each role in this association is an important one and we commend each person who is stepping up to the challenge. Thank you.
