\u00a0<\/p>
Students at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ are expected to be partners in the process of fulfilling the mission of the University by creating and maintaining standards within student groups, teams, and organizations that are conducive to personal growth and development.\u00a0 If student groups, teams, or organizations are to play an integral role in the University\u2019s plan, they must set standards that challenge each individual to achieve his or her greatest potential.\u00a0 Hazing is the antithesis of this goal, in that it attempts to tear down the feelings of personal pride and self-esteem of the individual, under the guise of creating some solidarity in the group.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ adheres to the:\u00a0 <\/span>University of Louisiana System Policy (Effective: 8\/27\/2019)<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 The <\/span>Louisiana Board of Regents Uniform Policy on Public Information on Hazing Prevention<\/span><\/a> (effective 8\/28\/2019), and upholds all Louisiana statutes related to hazing.\u00a0 The University prohibits any form of hazing.\u00a0 Student organizations and\/or individual members found to have engaged in hazing shall be in violation of the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Standards of Conduct and <\/span>Louisiana Statute R.S. 14:40.8<\/span><\/a> and are punishable by a fine and\/or imprisonment as well as by dismissal from the University.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Hazing includes and is not limited to any of the following acts associated with pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, participating in, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization:<\/span><\/p> It is important to note that physical activity that is normal, customary, and necessary for a person\u2019s training and participation in an athletic, physical education, military training, or similar program sanctioned by the postsecondary education institution is not considered \u201chazing.\u201d<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> 2.\u00a0 Organization<\/strong><\/span><\/i> is a fraternity, sorority, association, corporation, order, society, corps, cooperative, club, service group, social group, band, spirit group, athletic team, or similar group whose members are primarily students at, or former students of, a postsecondary education institution, including the national or parent organization of which an of the underlying entities provided for in this definition is a sanctioned or recognized member at the time of the hazing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> 3. Pledging <\/strong><\/span><\/i>is any action or activity related to becoming a member of an organization, including recruitment and rushing.<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> 4. Appropriate Authority\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/i><\/p> 5. Reckless Behavior <\/strong><\/span><\/i>is an activity or behavior in which a reasonable person knew or reasonably should have known that the activity or behavior may result in injury to another, including but not limited to, excessive consumption of alcohol, binge drinking, drag racing, consumption of any controlled dangerous substance, acts of hazing, or other similar activity.<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> 6. Serious Bodily Injury<\/strong><\/span><\/i> is bodily injury that involves unconsciousness, extreme physical pain, or protracted and obvious disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of the function of a bodily member, organ, or mental faculty, death, or a substantial risk of death.<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> In accordance with\u00a0 <\/span>R.S. 14:40.8(B) and R.S. 17:1801(C), 1801.1(C), and 1805(A)(3), 3 (B), and (D)(2) and to enact R.S. 17:1801.1(B)(3)<\/span><\/a><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> 2.<\/span>\u00a0It shall be the duty of all current and potential student organization members, officers, including any representative, director, trustee, or officer of any national or parent organization of to report as soon as practicable under the circumstances, to the Dean of Students and to law enforcement that one or more members of the organization were hazing another member.\u00a0 An educational institution that receives a report alleging the commission of an act or acts of hazing by one or more members of an organization that is organized and operating at the educational institution:<\/span><\/p> 3. <\/span>U.S. Stop Campus Hazing Act amends section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act (also known as the Clery Act) to require institutions to<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> In accordance with Act 637 of 208, codified at <\/span>R.S. 14:502\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Not later than August 1, 2018, the Board of Regents shall develop and adopt a uniform policy<\/span> (BORUP)<\/span><\/a> on hazing prevention. The policy shall define hazing as defined in R.S. 17:1801. Each postsecondary education institution shall adopt the uniform policy developed by the Board of Regents. An institution may expand the definition of hazing to prohibit additional behaviors it determines may be dangerous, but shall not otherwise amend the definition.<\/span><\/p> \u00a0<\/p> \u00a0<\/p> Student health and safety are paramount concerns at all times, and ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ acknowledges that providing amnesty can facilitate students in promptly addressing medical emergencies. As outlined in the <\/span>Student Policy and Procedure Manual,<\/span><\/a> the university reserves the right to offer amnesty to students who report medical emergencies arising from incidents potentially involving policy violations. It is important to note that amnesty does not extend to actions that precipitated the incident.
