{"id":419,"date":"2020-02-18T22:48:26","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T22:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/veterans\/?p=419"},"modified":"2020-12-09T16:07:52","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T16:07:52","slug":"new-gift-expands-scholarship-for-combat-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/veterans\/2020\/02\/18\/new-gift-expands-scholarship-for-combat-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"New Gift Expands Scholarship for Combat Veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>THIBODAUX, La. &#8212; ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association are excited to announce the expansion of a scholarship that helps veterans transition to civilian life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CVMA South Louisiana Chapter created the scholarship in partnership with the ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ State Veterans Organization last year. With their latest donation, the number of students eligible to receive the scholarship has increased from one to five.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese scholarships are important to our veterans at ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ because it shows our warriors the importance of giving back and more importantly that we, veterans, continue to take care of our own even after our military service,\u201d said ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ Veterans Coordinator Gilberto Burbante. \u201cFor us hanging up our uniforms doesn&#8217;t mean our service is over, we continue to honor our oath of service, especially to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Formed in 2001, the CVMA is comprised of motorcycle-riding veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. With members from all 50 states, their mission is to support and defend veterans who served their country and fought for our freedoms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe motto of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association is, \u2018Vets helping vets.\u2019\u201d This is a way we can help, as veterans, other veterans who are trying to better themselves by going back to school,\u201d CVMA member and Navy veteran John Bruner said. \u201cWe set this up last year because ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ is one of the most highly rated veterans organizations and veterans-friendly colleges in the United States.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recipients will receive $500 per semester for one year. Eligible students must:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Enrolled as full-time sophomores, juniors or seniors<\/li><li>Maintain a 2.5 GPA<\/li><li>A veteran who served in a combat zone during a war with an honorable discharge<\/li><li>Provide an essay explaining why they need the scholarship.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>ÐÓ°É´«Ã½ has earned the \u201cGovernor\u2019s Military and Veteran Friendly Campus\u201d designation and has consistently been named a \u201cMilitary Friendly School\u201d by G.I. Jobs magazine.
