Library to use Give-n-Day to improve film collection, study rooms

Film has increasingly become an important part of culture and education, and Ӱɴý professors frequently use it, with a course this semester centering around the Coen brothers films and past topics like Anthony Bourdain.

The Ellender Memorial Library would like your aid in helping students keep up with their classes, with a  aimed at offering more of the titles professors use. And of course, it can also give students the opportunity to destress with popcorn and a movie.

“Our professors have been using film in their courses to help break up constant readings,” said Andrew Barbier, Access Services Librarian and Give-N-Day lead.  “Like if you have a book assigned and readings assigned for your module, the next module being a film helps break up monotony of what students are doing — kind of like occasionally hosting class outside to differentiate the experience and build engagement. On top of that, Ӱɴý has a film studies program that has been growing in the past 10 or so years.”

To pair with this goal, the library is also seeking white noise machines to help improve our study room experience.

“In the future we would like to build soundproofing into the walls,” Barbier said. “This will help fill in the gap though in situations when one student group is quietly studying in a room next to a group practicing a presentation.”

is Tuesday, March 10 and is a university-wide fundraiser hosted annually by the Ӱɴý Foundation.

A donation of $10 will help buy a film, while a white noise machine is $50. The library is setting a goal of $2,026 to outfit all of the study rooms and purchase more films for students to check out.

Along the way to that and beyond, Barbier has set fun goals, including librarians and student workers doing a Fortnight stream on the library’s , Barbier doing film reviews on Insta Reels, a D&D stream, and Barbier getting a film related tattoo and possibly allowing students to pick the tattoo.

To promote Give-N-Day, the Library will be doing a 24 hour stream on March 10. The stream will feature The Thing Remastered, Alien Isolation, Minecraft with The Outcasters club, and a librarian movie review block.
