Communications Manager

The Roots of Music | New Orleans

Who we are:

The Roots of Music provides music history and theory as well as instrumental instruction and ensemble performance preparation. We serve kids ages 3-18 from low-income households and provide our students with hot meals and round-trip transportation to reduce common barriers to participation. Five days a week, 12 months a year, our program delivers over 2,500 hours of music education and academic tutoring, over 30,400 nutritious hot meals, 1,400 bus journeys, and supplies over 150 instruments for student use. Founded in 2007 by Derrick Tab, our campus is located at 5010 Piety Drive, New Orleans, LA 70126. 

What we’re looking for:

The Communications Manager plays a vital role at The Roots of Music overseeing communication channels and strategies to promote the organization’s mission, programs, and fundraising initiatives. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including public relations, photography and content creation, website management, social media, graphic design, and other communication-related tasks. 

Key Responsibilities:

Communications Strategy:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives.
  • Support fundraising cultivation of major donors, foundations, and corporate partners with tailored marketing collateral.
  • Create compelling messaging and storytelling that effectively communicates key messages to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of communication strategies through analytics and reporting and make data-driven recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain an archive of The Roots of Music’s photos, videos, and design work.

Marketing and Public Relations:

  • Serve as the organization’s primary point of contact for media inquiries. Cultivate and maintain relationships with journalists to secure media coverage and press opportunities. 
  • Create and maintain a database of media contacts and track media coverage and mentions.
  • Create and distribute press releases, media kits, and other communication materials to generate positive media coverage.
  • Plan and execute media events, such as press conferences, interviews, and public relations events.
  • Cultivate, design, and execute ad campaigns via social media platforms, digital and print publications, and local media outlets. 

Website Management and Online Presence:

  • Manage the organization’s website. Develop and optimize website content, including writing, editing, and publishing relevant articles, blog posts, and announcements.
  • Proficiency in managing website security, including regular backups, updates, and vulnerability assessments, is a plus. 
  • Develop and execute integrated marketing campaigns utilizing Mailchimp to develop targeted, data-driven email marketing strategies.
  • Monitor Google Business profile to reflect accurate information including hours of operation, location, photographs, etc.  

Social Media:

  • Manage and maintain the organization’s social media accounts across various platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Create and curate compelling and shareable content, including written posts, graphics, images, and videos, to amplify brand messaging and foster audience engagement.
  • Implement effective community management strategies, engaging with followers, responding to comments and messages, and fostering positive relationships with the online community.
  • Develop and manage social media fundraising campaigns.

Graphic Design:

  • Create and design various materials, including brochures, flyers, posters, infographics, social media graphics, sponsor packets, newsletters, event collateral, and other digital assets. 
  • Utilize industry-standard design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) to create and edit visual content that communicates key messages and engages the target audience.
  • Develop and maintain a library of design templates and assets to ensure consistent and cohesive visual branding across all communication channels.

Content Creation and Photography:

  • Research, write, and edit high-quality content for various communication channels, including articles, blog posts, monthly newsletters, and reports.
  • Manage and maintain content calendars, ensuring consistent and timely delivery of content across multiple channels.
  • Capture pictures and videos of rehearsals, performances, and parades to be edited and shared.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve content creation processes, tools, and workflows to enhance efficiency, collaboration, and the overall quality of content deliverables.
  • Conduct photoshoots as needed with staff members, students, merchandise, etc. 

Merchandise:

  • Design merchandise and work with local producers to create products for The Roots of Music online and in-person merch store/sales. 
  • Manage online merchandise store and orders via Shopify. 
  • Manage and fulfill orders placed on Shopify and sell merchandise at select events. 
  • Create merchandise/promotional items for special events like Mardi Gras and fundraisers.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Proven experience in communications, public relations, social media management, website management, and graphic design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and engaging manner.
  • Proficiency in graphic design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), and knowledge of web content management systems.
  • Proficiency in HTML and CSS for email template customization is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms and experience in managing social media accounts for organizational purposes.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining consistent branding and messaging.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and an understanding of their unique communication needs is a plus. 
  • Ability to build trusting and effective relationships with colleagues and external partners.
  • Deep belief in the mission and core purpose of Roots of Music.

Physical Demands:

  • This position involves regular walking, standing, sitting for extended periods of time, hearing, and talking.
  • May occasionally involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • May involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment, and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
  • Involves manual dexterity in using a keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.

Work Hour Requirements:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on program and seasonal needs.
  • Regular, dependable attendance, and punctuality.

Benefits:

  • Full time, Salaried $52,000 – 60,000 depending on experience
